Our Story

From our family to yours, we have been serving comfort, community and quality since 1936.

From Craft to Scale

Pastry with Purpose, Built to Scale

Lewis Pies, a proudly family-owned company, has been baking with love since 1936. Our story begins not in a factory but in a small terraced house in Swansea, where Wilfred Charles, an entrepreneur, took his love of pies and turned it into a business. As a result, he was excused from service in the Second World War, not out of fear but from a deep commitment to feed and support his local community in difficult times. You can only imagine how challenging it was to source a steady supply of raw materials. That quiet act of service is something we are proud of today at The Lewis Pie Co.

Still Handmade at Heart

From Pavement Pies to Local Legend

In those early days, pies were more than food; they were a symbol of care, resilience and belonging. Alongside his entrepreneurial wife Peggy, Wilfred worked tirelessly to meet growing demand while raising their children and becoming a fixture in the local streetscape. As the aroma of warm pastry and fresh bread drifted through the lanes of Swansea, a legacy was being baked one pie at a time. We used to cool the pies on the pavement, and the smell drew crowds of locals eager to buy them fresh from the bakery. We do not cool them on the street any more, yet the same care and passion is still seen and felt in every pie we make.

If you are going to make a pie, make it with care. People can taste the effort, even if they do not see it.

Building Tradition

Growing the Family Business into a Regional Staple

Rooted in Welsh Pride and Community

Supporting rugby and local causes, celebrating heritage through tradition, teamwork, and homegrown values.

We still sponsor local Welsh rugby teams, not only because we love the game, but because we believe in the pride, grit and togetherness it represents. Our love for Wales runs through everything we do, from the traditional recipes handed down through generations to our support for local suppliers and charities.

We are proud to call the land of Dylan Thomas our home, a place of poetry, passion and pies. As we look ahead to our next eighty-nine years, we do so with the same spirit that guided Wilfred Charles: service, community and a warm oven at the heart of it all.
